During the Summer of 2001, the Founder/CEO made a trip to Detroit, MI, and came back to Kentucky with a desire to start a community garden with the summer youth participants at New Zion Community Development Foundation, Inc., a community-based organization where he lead volunteering efforts with the assistance of other co-op students from GE Appliances. However, he was not able to acquire the needed support from the organization.
In addition, he designed a computer presentation for workshops on "life skills" that never took place, however, his ideas were not forgotten. We will bring some of his ideas to life with a hope to empower others through "self-reliance."
One major aspect of self-reliance is the resurrection of what has been lost: the art of "farming" and "gardening." It is imperative in urban and rural areas where there is little to no access to quality, organic, and fresh (local) produce.
